National Mooting Competition

manchester University College of Law (Chester) vs Manchester University - 2nd round @ College of Law (Chester) 10th February 2012

The 2nd round moot issue concerns Mental Health law - specifically wether a common law girlfriend was the Nearest Relative under the Mental Health Act 1983. Chester College of Law acted for the Appellant, the patient, in this matter and Manchester acted for the Respondent, the Local Authority and the NHS Trust.

Mr Peter Edwards, a very well known Mental Health lawyer was kind enough to judge the moot for us.
The College of Law (Chester) proved a very interesting team. Both students are on the GDL and thus have only some 4 months of English law studies under their belt. Rebecca Wright from Chester College Of Law has a distinct American feel to her advocacy, naturally enough she is a New York attorney. Her style of walking around the moot court was not what we are used to but proved helpful. Manchester were very strong, but ultimately on the day Chester College of Law were victorious.
National Mooting Competition Web Legal is pleased to announce its national mooting competition "So You Want To Be An Advocate".

Civitas Chambers, Cardiff Bristol / Welsh round - Friday 11th November 2011 @ Civitas Chambers, Cardiff

The Bristol / Welsh round - Mr Alex Freye (Swansea) here carefully outlining the policy strengths of Foakes vs Beer whilst his team mate Ms Purba Naidu looks on! Mr James Hughes (Bristol) and Mr Will Douglas-Jones (off picture) eagerly waiting for a weakness in the argument!

Mr Michael Imperato (New Law Solicitors) kindly judged the round and found for the respondent in the case

Whilst the performance of Alex and Purba was strong, James and Will succeeded in winning the round and face the winning team from Oxford in the 2nd round!
Kenworthys Chambers, Manchester Manchester Round - Thursday 20th October @ Kenworthys Chambers, Manchester

Two excellent teams from Manchester University, on the left we have Ms Natasha Rai and Ms Monica Savic-Jabrow and on the right we have Ms Nelofar Azam and Ms Ariana Demian.

The winners on the night were Monica and Natasha - strong contenders with more confidence that should hopefully take them far in the competition.
Magdalen College, Oxford Oxford round - Thursday 8th December @Magdalen College, Oxford.

Mr Matthew McGee & Ms Lauren Kreamer (Oxford) vs Ms Zhixin Tan & Karen Yong.

An excellent moot by all participants with a fine "cut and thrust" argument of the facts. Each team had clearly spent a great deal of time researching this area and it showed in the high quality of the moot.

Matthew and Lauren grabbed the winning place by only a short margin - but Ms Tan and Ms Yong are certainly strong barristers-in-waiting!
